PIEDMONT PO NATURE PARK
PIEDMONT PO NATURE PARK
The Piedmont Po Nature Park was established by regional law in 2019. Previously, individual areas along the Po in Piedmont, either presenting particular environmental and landscape value or threatened by possible building expansion, were protected by a system of Nature Reserves, Equipped Areas and Safeguard Zones. With the establishment of the Piedmont Po Nature Park, the existing parks in the Turin, Alessandria and Vercelli sections of the Po come under an effective single management along the subalpine section of the Po River Italy’s longest and most important river, in this case the Po also constitutes the link between the different areas that make up the Piedmont Po Protected Areas. The Piedmont Po Park extends entirely in the plain, but often touches hilly areas to the hydrographic right of the Po River.
In the Vercelli area, the river flows through the municipalities of Crescentino, Fontanetto Po, Palazzolo Vercellese and Trino, a flat area devoted to rice-growing but with a high biodiversity and bordering the Casale hill area.
The protected areas around Vercelli are particularly interesting for birdwatchers, who can admire numerous colonies of resident birds here.
