THE UNIQUE THRILL OF
FISHING IN VALSESIA
Blades of water, waterfalls and gentle hollows provide anglers with havens of unspoilt nature, immersed in silence, where they can enjoy sport fishing.
FISHING IN VALSESIA
Fishing in Valsesia is a unique experience with ancient origins. In fact, the Valley is internationally renowned and appreciated by enthusiasts for the traditional “fly fishing” method. This technique is based on a perfect understanding between the fisherman, the land, the seasons and nature. Valsesian fly fishing is the outcome of a series of harmonious gestures the angler makes with a fixed rod to naturally present the flies to the fish.
Fishing in Valsesia is practised in harmony with the seasons, respecting the life cycle of fish and paying particular attention to insect hatchlings. In spring, which is the most profitable period, the best area is the lower part of the river and its tributaries. Towards the warm season, you can gradually climb up to the heads of the valleys and to the Alpine lakes at an altitude over 2,000 m. The season then closes in the autumn, when the fish species must feed to produce eggs.
VALSESIAN SPORT FISHERMEN’S SOCIETY
The Sesia river has an ancient calling for fishing. In fact, an early Valsesian “fishing regulation” dates back to 1478, underscoring how important this activity was for the community’s livelihood. Today, the Valsesian Sport Fishermen’s Society, based in Varallo at Via Durio no. 22/a protects the river heritage by regulating the practice of this sport.
SVPS manages all public waters, from the springs to the Quarona dam, totalling about 300 km of rivers, streams, rivulets, canals and about fifteen high altitude Alpine lakes. With the exception of specially regulated fishing areas, the waters can be accessed by means of permits, which may be annual, fortnightly or daily, valid from May.
