The Antonini bridge
THE ANTONINI BRIDGE
The Antonini Bridge, one of Varallo’s most characteristic places, crosses the Mastallone stream and divides the city in half. On the orographic right of the stream is the original nucleus of Old Varallo on the slopes of Mount Vaso, while on the opposite side of the stream is New Varallo, rich in ancient streets, palaces and churches, which enrich the urban fabric that has characterised the city over the centuries. This bridge offers a spectacular view of the village of Varallo.
The first construction dates back to 1415 and features three very high arches, instead of the two we see today. This bridge was the only link between the two parts of Varallo for over four centuries. A new structure was built in 1863, the one we see today, made up of only two arches.
Just a short distance from the bridge you can admire a particularly suggestive corner of Varallo: Varallo beach, a beach overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Mastallone, accessible to citizens and tourists in fine weather.
