Vintebbio Castle
VINTEBBIO CASTLE
The village of Serravalle Sesia is dominated by the majestic ruins of an ancient castle that around the 13th century was part of a chain of fortifications defending the territory between Gattinara and Roccapietra.
The date of construction of Vintebbio Castle is not known. Its oldest core was most likely built around 750, probably on the ruins of a Roman castrum. It was built by the bishops of Vercelli to defend the territory as part of the complex of fortifications that once ran along the Sesia river. It was finally dismantled by the Valsesians in 1559. Today you can still see the interesting ruins of the perimeter walls and a square tower.
The castle can be reached by an easy 15-minute walk through the undergrowth from the village of Serravalle Sesia following path 702. The castle ruins stand out on a plateau that offers an enchanting 360° view of the valley crossed by the Sesia river, from the Vercelli plains to Mount Rosa. Here you will also find a picnic area with tables and benches.
